Character Modeller
About the Role
Join Light Pattern, a boutique game development studio led by Path of Exile co-creator Chris Wilson.
Light Pattern is seeking a Character Modeller to help create characters, creatures, and other 3D assets for our unannounced game project. You’ll work closely with art, design, animation, and programming to build distinctive, high-quality models that fit the dark, atmospheric world of the game.
Character modelling will be a major focus of the role, but we are looking for an artist with strong generalist modelling abilities who is comfortable working across a broad range of art disciplines when required.
This is a full-time, on-site position in Auckland, New Zealand. Relocation assistance is available.
Responsibilities
- Create characters and creatures from initial concept, reference, or a loosely defined brief through to final in-game implementation
- Help define and develop the visual style of the game’s characters and creatures
- Work autonomously and confidently, developing characters and monsters based on the established game world
- Collaborate with the Art Director and wider team to ensure characters remain cohesive with the game’s overall visual direction
- Also contribute as a generalist modeller, creating props, weapons, environmental objects, and other game assets
- Apply strong general 3D modelling skills across a wide variety of organic and hard-surface subjects
- Help establish and improve efficient character and asset-production workflows as the project develops
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional experience creating 3D character art and general 3D modelling for games
- Experience with Blender
- A strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality character modelling, texturing and sculpts
- Strong generalist modelling skills and the ability to confidently model both organic and hard-surface subjects
- A strong understanding of form, proportion, anatomy, silhouette, materials, and surface detail
- Experience creating production-ready assets for real-time games
- An ability to work from concept art, reference, or a loosely defined visual brief
- An appreciation for classic RPGs from the 1990s and 2000s
- A deep familiarity with Diablo II. Not just playing it, but understanding what makes its characters, creatures, art, and systems so enduring
