About the Role
Join Light Pattern, a boutique game development studio led by Path of Exile co-creator Chris Wilson.
Light Pattern is seeking an Environment Artist to help build the dark, atmospheric world of our unannounced game project. You’ll work closely with art, design, and programming to create environments for a game built around extensive procedural level generation.
This is a full-time, on-site position in Auckland, New Zealand. Relocation assistance is available.
Responsibilities
- Create environments from initial idea through to final in-game implementation
- Ideate environments that support the game’s visual direction, gameplay, and world-building
- Create concept art and visual explorations to establish the look, mood, architecture, and key features of an environment
- Translate concepts into modular tiles, environment kits, props, materials, and other production-ready assets
- Design assets and tiles that work effectively within procedural level-generation systems
- Work closely with design and programming to define the rules and constraints that govern how environments are assembled
- Evaluate generated environments and refine assets, layouts, and visual rules to improve variety, readability, composition, and atmosphere
- Optimise environment assets while maintaining visual quality
- Collaborate with the Art Director and wider team to ensure environments remain cohesive with the overall visual direction
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional experience creating environment or level art for games
- Experience with Blender
- A strong portfolio demonstrating realistic 3D environments and level art
- Experience creating modular environment tiles for use with procedural level generation systems
- An appreciation for classic RPGs from the 1990s and 2000s
- A deep familiarity with Diablo II. Not just playing it, but understanding what makes its world, art, and systems so enduring
